Sheffield is a city that lays claim to a rich musical heritage, from Pulp and The Human League to Richard Hawley and Reverend & The Makers. Not forgetting of course Arctic Monkeys. But who’s next in line to follow suit you ask? Well, I say look no further than the band of brothers that is The Sherlocks. Consisting of the Crook brothers (Kiaran & Brandon) and the Davidson brothers (Josh & Andy), the Bolton-upon-Dearne four-piece are set to release their emphatic debut single, ‘Live For The Moment’ in less than two weeks time with a launch gig at The Rocking Chair. But what can you expect from this latest concoction?
Well, after the quality of each and every track on their EP First Bite of the Apple it may have looked a tall order to come up with something better, yet the band have duly succeeded and then some. Right from the off we are inundated with a unfailingly catchy riff coupled with high-tempo drums, much the same vein as ‘Chasing Shadows’.
The lyrics “Live for the moment, you’ll never know what coming round the corner”, impeccably delivered as always by lead vocalist Kiaran, register the message of the song in one fell swoop, while the sheer pace of the piece in its entirety will undoubtedly make it one to look forward to live as well as a classically tentative toe-tapper for times when you simply need music for music’s sake.
Now, they may well be named after Conan Doyle’s enigmatic detective, but it doesn’t take a high-functioning sociopath to figure out the reason behind The Sherlocks’ rapidly increasing reputation and popularity, especially in the northern music circles. Case-in-point, it was merely a few months ago that I saw them at The Vulcan in Huddersfield, while last month they played their biggest show yet in support of Simple Minds to a crowd of thousands at Hardwick Live. So all that’s left to say from the evidence thus far is that I strongly suggest you see them too. Post haste.
